Pizza Fusion combines an accent on health, with a commitment to running a sustainable business. A nation-wide, US-based franchise, Pizza Fusion is winning the pizza wars by providing verifiable information about the way they do business.
Pizza is a food icon. Apart from debates over the pros and cons of various styles of pizza, people know what to expect and what they like.
“We believe that if every organization operated at the level of integrity that we strive for, the world would be a better place.”
Yet, Pizza Fusion identified a gap in the market and has turned that gap into a nationwide franchise. Pizza Fusion uses certified one hundred percent organic ingredients for the pizzas and other products they make. With plenty of choice in the market, pizza eaters go where the eating is good. You only need to look at Pizza Fusion’s business growth curve to know that what they’re baking is working.
But it’s the extras that count. Pizza Fusion acknowledges they learnt lessons from companies like Patagonia which deliver a point of view with their product. Pizza Fusion’s point of view is a point of difference, and an integral part of a profitable business. They verify that they offset one hundred percent of their carbon footprint; they deliver with a fleet of hybrid cars; use biodegradable starch-based utensils and plates, and recyclable pizza boxes; and the stores are LEED certified, with recycled denim as insulation, and countertops made from recycled glass. Pizza Fusion also offers an Organics 101 course for children, who learn to make organic pizza. They also create sustainable value chains by working with suppliers and vendors who share their commitment.
Case Study
Agricultural waste is combined with mushroom roots to literally grow a new form of wall insulation that competes with foams and plastics.

We're stoked that Biolite won SB10's Sustainable Innovation award, announced on the last day of the conference. Jonathan Cedar, co-inventor and the nascent company's CEO delivered a great presentation that made clear the significant impact that could be achieved if Biolite (and stoves like it) replace traditional wood-fired stoves in the developing world. The Biolite stove reinvents stoves used for home cooking in Asia, Africa and Latin America by making the burning process more efficient. The greater efficiency the less fuel is used and less smoke is generated. Less smoke, the less harm to the health of the cooks. Biolite has an additional feature; they've developed a process that converts a small part of the thermal energy into electricity. This means that users can recharge electrical devices while cooking, and that's got to be good for developing world users facing regular megacity brown outs, or for those who are off the grid completely.
